In the past it only seemed a detailed task for a professional photographer to need a photo management solution, these days it is something we all need to consider if we hope to ever find all those photos we take.

Can you relate to any of the following situations?

  • Your mobile device will not take a photo or it will tell you to buy more storage because you have filled up your data
  • Your computer slows down to snails pace when you download your photos from your camera
  • You can’t find the photo you are looking for to send to your relatives of your holiday in Spain last year (or any other photo searching situation)
  • You have previously experienced the heartbreak of crashed computers and lost photos

Here are my top recommendations to help keep things under control:

1/ Delete any photos that are simply no good! We all take garbage photos from time to time, why waste storage keeping something we would never use(like the inside of your handbag for instance!)?
2/ Download photos to your computer on a regular basis (especially after special events/outings etc )to avoid losing any precious moments from crashed computers, stolen or lost cameras/phones
3/ Create folders for your photos according to how you will best remember them (by date, name, location, event etc).filesystem
4/ First backup these photos to an external physical hard drive (I have used a few different brands over the years, Western Digital, Toshiba, Verbatim, all with great results and all still working!)
5/ Second backup to a cloud storage ( I use Dropbox, but there are several others such as Google Drive, Amazon etc)read more here: cloud storage
6/ Third backup by printing some of your favourites. What a great idea!!There are many wonderful photo printing options these days such as photos books, canvases, magnets and simple old fashioned prints.
7/ Finally remove the original photos from your phone, CF/SD card and computer once all these backups have been done! You will free up space on all of these devices and they will perform at optimal capability. Best of all you will have piece of mind knowing you can access your stored photos quickly and easily.

We are so fortunate to live in an age of instant access to information via apps, blog posts, facebook pages, podcasts and more.Sometimes, though, it can all seem a bit overwhelming. It can feel like we have no time to organise ourselves because there are so many new ways of being distracted by technology.

I have definitely found myself in that situation on many occasions and have had to make a conscious effort to determine what I give my time to.
Quite often I see articles, recipes, design ideas and DIY projects that I want to be able to go back to at a later date. This is where I have discovered the brilliant platform of Pinterest to be one of my top favourites when it comes to organising and storing ideas and articles.

Pinterest is a virtual pin board for ideas, recipes, inspirational quotes, home renovation tips, kitchen design, styling, flowers, wedding planning…the list goes on.
Instead of tearing out magazine pages, copying down recipes, trying to recall the way a kitchen looked with a wooden bench top instead of marble, pinterest can be used to organise all of the these and more ideas every single day.

Anyone can set up an account by going to the website found here: PINTEREST

Then simply create a board for each category you like to collect ideas for, look for the pinterest symbol

and start pinning!

Here are a few examples of boards I have created to help keep me organised :

Design Ideas For the Home
Creative Recycling Ideas
Baking Inspiration
Meal Ideas
Healthy Treats

Pinterest keeps adding new features to its platform and one of the latest that I LOVE is simply being able to pin a photo straight from a mobile device to a board that you have created. An example of when I would use this would be when I am out and about traveling to cafes, tourist spots etc and taking photos of the food, drinks and scenery to keep a record. We are now able to pin those photos straight away to a board.(NB.This needs to be enabled on your device first)

By doing this you are creating a data base for yourself to be able to go back to at a later date instead of having to search through your mobile device for the photo, as well as this you may be doing something great for the places that you take photos of by sharing businesses and locations, in turn helping them to grow and thrive!

As part of a personal project to get to know my neighbourhood a little better; (by taking photos, filming and making a few notes), I took into account the connection I had with working outdoors, along with my love of food, and made Jjaras Farmgate in Inverloch my first port of call.

This wonderful little gem in the beachside township of Inverloch is not only centred around a life of working outside, but also one of sharing and respect for the natural world…

The family of owners open their doors 3 days a week, year round, to the community and visitors to offer the food that they lovingly grow and prepare onsite.

Starting out to create a self sufficient, organic farm for themselves, their business grew from selling produce at their gate over 10 years ago to what is now a thriving hub of seasonal, local produce, a full service cafe and a vineyard.

Handpicked with great care to maintain the integrity of the plant, the produce is washed and refrigerated within minutes to maintain the freshest quality. Only eating straight from the plant could be considered fresher!

Understanding the growing seasons, the local weather peculiarities and traditional organic horticulture techniques handed down from father to son,Joe and his family have successfully turned a passionate hobby into a beautifully sustainable lifestyle. Not only do they sell their produce to local residents and visitors to their farm, their cafe is home to fresh, seasonal baking and meals inspired by the multicultural heritage of their French, Italian, Swiss and Australian origins.

Slowing down to take time to grow and make everything they do by hand has given them the ability to evolve and strengthen through the challenges that come along with farming, life and business.

Jjaras Farm puts their heart and soul into everything they do and welcome everyone with opens arms to be a part of their community.

At this time of year there are so many things to do in preparation for celebrating the magic we want to feel at Christmas.

One thing I have become aware of over the years is that it is important to take a step back and enjoy the festive season and reflect on what we love most in our lives.
